WhatsApp is an extremely popular messaging platform that allows users to communicate across multiple platforms. WhatsApp, a Facebook app, allows users to not only send and receive text messages but also record voice messages, make video calls, upload images, and track your location. You can also configure certain tools and settings to customize and control your privacy and safety within the app. Cybersecurity attacks are on the rise and hackers have taken advantage of social media tools to gain access to data. We have provided a list of security tips that will help you keep your privacy.

Modify your privacy settings

It is recommended that you modify your privacy settings to prevent strangers from downloading your profile picture. You can make the changes by changing last seen, profile picture, about and status to only me or my contacts. This is how you can change your privacy preferences. Tap on the triangle at the top-right corner of the WhatsApp app. Open WhatsApp Settings > Account > Privacy, then choose the option you want.

Two-step verification

WhatsApp offers a 2-step verification option to add an extra layer of security. To prevent your messages from being seen by anyone other than your contacts, you only need to create a 6-digit PIN code. This option is enabled under Settings > Account > 2-step verification > Enable. You can also add your email address to reset the PIN if you lose it.

Lock your WhatsApp Account

This social messaging platform provides a fingerprint lock option for users. This feature prevents others from accessing WhatsApp chats, even if your phone is unlocked. Open WhatsApp > Settings > Account > Privacy to enable this feature. After opening the privacy tab, scroll down to the bottom and click fingerprint lock. The lock screen can be adjusted and’show content notifications’ turned on.

Update for security device linking

WhatsApp allows you to link your account with your computer. To link WhatsApp web and your WhatsApp account you’ll first need to use the fingerprint lock to access the app. When you attempt to link your account to the desktop using the QR code scan, an alert pops up when Web/Desktop login prompts. It is possible to unlink your devices easily from your smartphone if there are any suspicious login activities. This helps protect the account against being hacked. Open the WhatsApp web from your phone and the desktop to link your WhatsApp account. The computer will display a QR code. Scan it using your smartphone and you will see the chat layout on your PC.
